## Policy update (automatic / low-cost)

We **do not require paid Getty/Adobe** for every plate.  
Codeina may fill spreads using **approved free stock**, **paid stock when you choose**, or **AI-generated** images that match the art brief.

### AI image rules

- Prompt must follow the spread brief (mood, lens, fog, no people, etc.)  
- Caption may stay poetic; **credit line**: “Illustration / AI-assisted image for editorial atmosphere” when AI  
- Never label AI image as a real CLF conservation site  
- Prefer print-friendly resolution; upscale carefully; avoid heavy JPEG artifacts  

### Free stock rules

- Confirm **commercial / print** use allowed for that site’s license  
- Save photographer name + URL + download date in `ASSET_REGISTER.csv`  
- Prefer vertical/landscape that matches double-page crop

On VPS, worker may:

1. Rebuild PDF stack from manuscript  
2. Track missing plates in ASSET_REGISTER  
3. Prefer free-stock search terms / AI prompts derived from briefs  
4. Place images under `assets/photos/` when downloads succeed  

Worker must not scrape arbitrary copyrighted sites.
